Growing Together
A decades long photographic study of the Levin twins
by photographer Marthanna Yater
Growing Together travels to the western North Carolina town of Burnsville in Yancey County. The Levin twins grew up in the adjacent community of Celo. Yater was a beginning photography student at Penland School of Crafts, in neighboring Mitchell County, when she met Hannah and Molly. The sisters were six years old. The story comes full circle as Yater and the Levin twins reunite thirty-two years later in the North Carolina mountains where the story began in the autumn of 1984.
Three generations of the Levin family
Three sets of identical twins, spanning three generations, attended the opening of Growing Together at T.R.A.C. gallery, Burnsville. Edwina and Cynthia Bringle from Penland, Hannah and Molly Levin who grew up in Celo, and Gray and Shaw, twins who were taught in Montessori school by Hannah and Molly's mother, Wanda.
